April 2009 Houston Electricity Rates

We have compiled a list of some of the best and worst residential electricity rates in the Houston Texas area. You will find this detailed list below. Trickster Electric Company is near the top although we have received several complaints that Trickster raises the electric rate through TDSP related charges once the customer gets the electricity bill. Because of this we want to warn customers about the potential of Trickster’s (name withheld by legal) electric rate being higher then what it appears. If you are one of Trickster’s customers that thought you were going to be charged one rate but once you received the energy bill were charged a much higher energy price then please feel free to comment below. October 2008 Dallas Residential Electric Rates

If you are confused about electric rates in Dallas and surrounding Oncor utility area we have a great comparison chart below comparing mostly fixed rates with several different electric providers. These electric rates are residential rates. There are a few variable rates in the mix because those companies only offered a variable electric rate so we listed their only option. The rates are designated as to whether they are a fixed electric rate or a variable rate. I recommend to avoid signing up on a variable rate because the month after you sign up on that rate plan the electric rate could do just about anything. A variable electric rate has taken many residential customers by surprise this summer when rates trippled in price. A fixed electric rate is a much safer way to lock into an energy rate because you know exactly what price you will pay the entire term of your contract.

Humble Texas Residential Electric Rates

In Humble Texas there are over 50 different electric companies to pick from. Among these companies you will find several different rate plans, gimmicks, and some out right dishonestly. One of the ways a provider will trick a new customer is by quoting a rate that does not have the pole charges included in the rate. The pole charges also go by the name TDSP charges or transmission charges. In Humble that charge is past through on a 1 to 1 basis by Centerpoint Energy. Centerpoint Energy is the pole company and a monopoly. They cannot sell you electricity but do pass through the pole charges on your bill regardless of the provider you choose. Commercial electric rates in Humble Texas are a little different. The pole charges are not readily known as they are for residential customers which means the provider can only quote the Energy provider generation charge, excluding the pole and wires charges. This makes the commercial electric rate look better but is not meant to mislead. Only after obtaining the usage data from the utility, like Centerpoint, do we then know what the pole charges are for a commercial business.

Disclaimer regarding Riverway Power Co.
A disclaimer needs to be made about Riverway Power Electric Company. Riverway Power cancelled their Texas electric power customers fixed electric rate contracts around the middle of April and were unable to be reached from their India outsourced call center for awhile due to large call volume associated with the breaking of their fixed energy contracts. This issue was reported to Electricity Bid by several of their prior customers. Because of this it is important to know that they just started business in Texas recently and have already renegged on their residential energy contracts. In our estimation we cannot recommend them at this time due to a less then satisfactory record with Texas consumers.

Lowest Residential Electric Rates in Texas

As of January 9 2008 several electric companies have updated their electric rates in an attempt to become the lowest cost Retail Electric Provider in Texas. The prices are lowest in the TXU\Oncor (Dallas\Fort Worth) area and are a little higher in the Centerpoint region (Houston Texas). Startex Power has the best 12 month fixed rate term in the Houston area in the 11 cents kWh range with no monthly service fee. Not to shabby for the Houston area. As an example I will use the Dallas Fort Worth area since they have some of the lowest electric rates in Texas. Competing Among Providers
Startex Power is now lower then Spark Energy’s 12 month residential electric rate. I compared several factors when deciding that their rate is lower. For instance both companies do not charge a monthly customer service charge. Spark offers a rate at 12.4 cents kwh and Startex Power offers a rate at 11.4 cents. Since neither have a monthly customer service charge you will do better by signing up with Startex Power. As a comparative example, if you were to compare Reliant Energy who offers a 15.5 cent per kWh energy rate you would think they were crazy but they have some strategy we just don’t understand I guess? My father in law switched from them immediately upon being told they would lower his 18 cents rate to 15.5 when rates at historically low price levels. They are still charging summer prices? There is just no provider in Texas right now that can beat Startex on their residential fixed electric rates.
If you average in the monthly customer service charge some providers charge the rate can begin to look much worse. Fortunately Startex does not charge a monthly fee unless you are under 500 kWh but even so it would only be $4.95 extra each month. So the winning provider for October – November 2007 Residential electric rates is Startex Power and of course Reliant is out of the ball park right now. Way to go Startex, I am glad you decided to get with the program and become more competitive with your fixed electric rate!
Startex also happens to have a very good 1 month promo rate if you need something short term. Their month to month rate is really low but on the 2nd month it may go up depending on what the market is up to. The reason for the higher rate is that you are month to month with them when signing on the one month promo. This however is good if you don’t want to sign a contract. This is one of the best deals around for a no contract energy rate.

Moving Into A New Apartment
When moving into a new apartment you will likely be given a paper with the main utilities in your area. For Houston this may be Reliant Energy and for Dallas this could be TXU Energy. The problem arises sometimes when you call them thinking they are the only energy provider in that area and they ask for a $300 – $500 deposit. Your head starts to spin and fumes begin to come out of your ears. This is the time when someone needs to tell you to stop and pay attention because you don’t have to call TXU or Reliant to setup electricity at your apartment. There are over 40 retail electric providers in Texas and over 200 different electric rate plans to choose from.
What Electric Company Should I Call Then
If you want to avoid the deposit that makes since but you also want a low rate and good terms and conditions with the contract. If possible you want to have any type of customer service charge waived because this could be as much as $15 extra a month would eat up any type of energy savings you thought you were achieving. So get the customer service charge to zero and then look at the energy rate. The electric rate for a residence in September 2007 is about 11 cents kwh. That is about as low as it has gotten this month. It actually came down to 10.6 cents kwh for a couple days. As you can see electric rates in Texas are volatile but you can lock in on a fixed rate anywhere from 3 months all the way to 36 months with most energy providers. The 12 month rate is the recommended term to get on as it is low and will insure you a decent electricity rate as energy in Texas is expected to go higher for the long term.
