What to Know Before Signing up With Just Anyone
We have compiled a list of some of the more popular residential Texas electricity companies and rate plans. If there is a known issue with one of the residential electricity companies we list that concern next to the provider. There are some providers that have blatantly obvious tricks we know of that shows one rate on their website but when receiving your first electricity bill the rate is much higher due to the TDSP charges not being clearly apparent. A note should be made that these Texas electricity providers are usually involved in leaving off the TDSP charge on their advertised rate. We are not sure exactly how many energy companies participate in this practice as well as they change their practices depending on how much heat they are receiving from PUCT complaints. You can read Consumer Energy complaints from some of these providers customers who can explain what exactly can occur when switching to a gimmicky energy company better than we can.

Understanding Your Houston Residential Electricity Rate
Most electric providers in Texas will bundle the TDSP charges into the energy only rate giving you an all-in rate that can be compared against other Texas electricity companies like TXU Energy and Reliant Energy. We have listed both TXU and Reliant in our comparison chart in order to compare their electricity prices with other Texas electric providers. You will notice that the two largest energy providers in Texas have much higher electricity prices than some of the smaller but good electric companies. Right now Champion Energy and Startex Power are two reputable electricity providers in Texas offering very cheap fixed electricity rate offers. All fees and charges are disclosed with these two companies. With Startex if a customer uses less then 500 kWh hours a month there will be a $4.95 monthly service fee although most Texas electricity consumers use more then this so it shouldn’t be an issue for most customers. A monthly service fee is simply an additional charge many electricity providers have in addition to their electricity price. It is important that a provider disclose this fee upfront rather than hide it in the contract details. We have made these fees obvious in our rate chart so you can make a clear apples to apples comparison of electricity prices in Texas.

October 2008 Houston Residential Electric Rates
Posted by: | CommentsHurricane Ike, Electric Comparison, and Relief from Summer Rates
Houston had a major issue with hurricane Ike this last month and surprisingly it had little effect on electric rates. A lot of oil and gas infrastructure was shut down but nothing was destroyed. This still usually has a negative impact on the price of electricity but because oil and natural gas is being swayed by several other factors in the trading commodities market the electric rates did not spike up.
Electric rates in Houston have come down way below their highs this summer when rates were at historical all time highs. That price spike in the summer was related to natural gas prices rising in the commodities sector beyond any level they have seen before. This had about a 90% correlation with the price of electricity. To complicate matters Houston residential electric rates were higher then usualy because several providers had bought electricity on the MCPE ERCOT market and could not meet their financial responsibilities. These electric companies also had no hedging in place so if an electric customer in Houston was on a variable electric rate they may have seen their rate tripple during this time.
Electric Rates Look Much Better From Summer Prices
Take a look at our Houston Texas electric rate comparison. We have rates listed from cheapest to most expensive. Most rates are fixed and there is a designation in the chart to differentiate between a fixed rate or a variable rate. I do not recommend signing a variable Houston electric rate contract as it is subject to change without notice. You may click on the links in the chart below and sign up online at these discounted online electric rate prices.

October 2008 Dallas Residential Electric Rates
Posted by: | Comments
If you are confused about electric rates in Dallas and surrounding Oncor utility area we have a great comparison chart below comparing mostly fixed rates with several different electric providers. These electric rates are residential rates. There are a few variable rates in the mix because those companies only offered a variable electric rate so we listed their only option. The rates are designated as to whether they are a fixed electric rate or a variable rate. I recommend to avoid signing up on a variable rate because the month after you sign up on that rate plan the electric rate could do just about anything. A variable electric rate has taken many residential customers by surprise this summer when rates trippled in price. A fixed electric rate is a much safer way to lock into an energy rate because you know exactly what price you will pay the entire term of your contract.
Current October 2008 Residential Electric Rate Comparison
These rates are updated as of October 2 2008. Because residential electric rates change every few weeks these rates will be a little higher or lower as the month continues. This comparison chart will serve as a good indicative comparison of where residential electric rates are at for the month of October 2008. You may click on the links on this comparison chart and sign up online to receive a slightly lower electric rate then calling these providers on the phone. By signing up for electric service online you keep the electric companies costs low for aquiring a new customer and they reward you by giving you a slight discount then if you were to call and speak to a customer service rep over the phone. Signing up online also allows you to take advantage of online discounts that are not promoted when calling the providers on the phone. When you call an electric provider on the phone they expect to close about 70 % of those customers who call in. Because of this most providers will try to sell you a higher electric rate then is available via online discount offers.

Startex Energy offers several electric rate terms such as the 3 month plan, 6 month, 12 month, 24 month and 36 month. The rate goes up as you sign up for a longer monthly term. The reason the electric rate goes up on longer terms is due to the correlation electric rates have with natural gas in Texas. Did you know that most of our electricity in Texas is generated by Natural Gas power generation plants? Because of the reliance upon natural gas most providers buy a portion of the electric rate they sell to you on the natural gas futures market. These futures contracts go up in price as you go out on a longer term. If you have questions about the rate comparisons in the box to the left just give us a call at 1-800-971-4020. We pride ourselves in going above and byond to make sure all fees and charges are diclosed with every electric provider in our comparison chart. You will know exactly what your rate is after viewing the list of electric rates and energy companies in the zip code tool to the left.
Electric Contracts Nothing Like Cell Phone Contracts
You may have determined by now that electric rate pricing is nothing like how a cell phone company determines to charge you for air time. Rewarding you for signing a longer term contract just isn’t a possibility as the electric company would be losing money to charge you less for a rate on a long term contract. Because of the confusion of monthly term electric contracts many people choose to get on a month to month plan. The problem with the month to month plans is you never have a guarantee for what the electric rate will be the following month. Startex Power is good in that the month to month plan they offer actually shows the last 2 consecutive months of where the variable rate has been at historically. Because Startex does not hide this fact you can feel safe to say that you would be getting on a rate built for the person who just doesn’t want to sign a contract. Some people don’t want to lock in for any length of time and this type of product allows that person to ride the wave of the market. The only issue with the month to month electric rate contracts is the premium you pay. You generally are offered a great 1st month rate and then the rate goes up to a premium that is quite a bit higher then the first month. For instance, Startex may give you a rate the first month for 9.1 cents kWh but then the 2nd and 3rd month rates would be 12.3 and 12.6 cents kWh. This energy product is good for those only needing electricity for a short time because they will be moving soon or something of that nature. If you were to break a fixed term contract most providers will charge you some type of early termination penalty that is usually somewhere in the ballpark of $100. The month to month contract allows you to escape the contract with no fees. Of course, once your fixed term contract is up you are free to shop elsewhere but don’t cancel earlier or most providers will make you pay their termination fee.

Spark Energy is currently advertising several different electric rates at a mid price range in comparison to some of the other competitive Texas electric providers. They currently have a 12 month rate at 11.9 cents kWh with no monthly service charge. This is an ok electric rate although Startex Power has lowered their 12 month term rates below Spark Energy’s prices. Startex Power has a slightly better 12 month rate for 11.7 cents kWh with no monthly service charge. This rate with Startex is a promotional rate and can be found here.

Champion Energy In Comparison To Startex
Startex has the best overall electric rate at 11.3 cents kWh in the Dallas area with no monthly service fee. As of Feb 23 2009 Startex Power offers the cheapest available electric rate in Dallas and Houston. Champion Energy used to be the best electric rate among the low cost electric providers offering promotional discount offers but as of February 2009 Startex Power is offering the best rate. Champion’s promotional electric rate offer has expired although you can sign up with Startex Power on their discount electric rate plan by clicking here. Those With No Credit History Or Bad Credit
If you are worried the electric company may try and ask for a deposit we have some suggestions on getting by with the cheapest deposit requirement. We have seen that Bounce Energy generally has the cheapest deposit requirement if you have been hit with this request before and also offers a guaranteed no deposit option called the No Deposit and Low Deposit Choices. As an example of a provider that usually needs a deposit based on credit score, Champion usually asks for $200 – $250 deposit if they don’t like your credit. Other electric providers want even more if you do not meet their credit standards. You may see this as a lot but TXU and Reliant mant times ask for a lot more than what Champion requires. Spark Energy used to waive the deposit amount if you sign up for auto bill pay by credit card or bank account but they have ended this practice. If Spark needs a deposit it may be for around $400 – $500 depending on what they think of your credit history. Startex Power is somewhere in the middle as far as what they come back asking for in regards to a deposit. The best thing you could do is try Bounce Energy and sign up on their “Fresh Start Plan” guaranteed no deposit. At one time you had to try several providers and pick the lowest deposit you could handle and build up that year of utility bills paid in full before you could get away with not needing to pay an electric company a deposit. Bounce allows you a second chance if you have little or no credit. Learn more about their no and low deposit electric rate plans

Affordable Texas Electricity
Posted by: | CommentsFinding An Affordable And Ethical Provider
Merry Christmas everyone! We are ending the year and we have seen electric rates come down to a historical 12 month low. At this time which is December 21 2007 we have found a 6 month residential electric rate at 10.2 cents kWh with no monthly fee, an 8 month rate at 10.4 cents (no fee), and a 12 month rate at 11.1 cents a kWh (no fee). These are the lowest fixed rate terms all year and they are sitting at a support level that will likely see them jump up soon. Now would be the time to take advantage of this bottom in the Texas energy market. You can browse over to the lowest cost provider by going to their website to review their rates and sign up online. The promotional coupon code is built in to save additional money over their regular rate: Startex Power
If You Live In Houston
If you live in Houston you will actually save the most money with Startex Power as well. This reputable REP electric provider by the name of Startex has been in business since Texas deregulated. As of Dec 21 2007 they had a 1 year plan at 11.1 cents a kWh with no monthly service fee. As of Feb 2009 they have a rate in Dallas at 11 cents kWh for 1 year fixed and slightly higher in Houston. You may go to their promotional energy rate here: Startex Power
Rates have climbed quite a bit since this article was written back in December of 2007 but came back down again in historical fashion as of Feb 2009. Right now Startex Power still offers a consistently lower rate then the other Texas electric companies. You can sign up with Startex’s current residential electric rate here: Startex Residential Discount Electric Rate
Cirro Energy
Posted by: | CommentsCirro Energy Appears To Be The Lowest
Many people have called me quoting Cirro Energy who offers what seems to be a low fixed rate for 12 months and 24 months. After examining the terms of service I found that the rate is a variable rate. What ends up happening is a customer signs a contract that locks them into the rate for 12 or 24 months and they have no guarantee what the rate will do. This protects Cirro Energy if the rate goes up or down but not the customer. Cirro still makes their retail margin on the rate but the customer cannot get out of the contract without penalty if the rate were to go up. The purpose of signing a contract is to lock in for a period of time against future electric rate price volatility. By Cirro offering a variable rate for a term you must sign and lock into I believe they may be knowingly or unknowingly confusing the customer to thinking they are signing into a fixed rate. Stay away from this rate product as it is not a fixed rate and Cirro can change the rate without notice at any time.
I have added a company in the chart below to compare with Cirro Energy called Startex Power. They have a very low fixed electric rate in comparison with some of the other retail electric providers. You will do much better to lock in at this low fixed rate then to get in on a variable rate that can go up on you. If you would like to participate in a low variable rate Startex offers one that has a promo rate the first month in the 9 cent range and then follows the natural gas and Texas spot price market after that. Historically you would pay about 12 – 12.5 cents on their variable rate but you are not locked into a contract. I would only recommend this rate product for those who don’t want to be locked into a contract. Otherwise, you should get on a fixed rate product for a 12 or 24 month term with Startex.

Startex Promotional Code
Posted by: | CommentsStartex Power residential has a 3 month, 6 month, 8 month, 1 year, 24 month, 36 month, and a month to month electric rate plan. If you have been considering using Startex Power for your residential electricity you would be making a wise decision as they compare as one of the very lowest electric rates out there right now if you were to compare them with some of the other competitive electric providers in the Texas market. Another positive thing about this company is that they have yet to do something unethical such as hide additional fees in their electric rate. You will not be charged a monthly customer service fee and the rate is as straightforward as it could be.
One caution however is to not sign up on the promotional month to month rate unless you understand it first. The first month you will pay a very low rate in the 9 cent range but every month after that you will be a about 2 to 3 cents higher then that as it follows a variable market spot rate. This rate is variable and you are not locked into a contract which is a good plan if you are not wanting to be in a contract. Otherwise, the only way to get a consistent low electric rate in Texas is to lock in on some type of monthly term fixed rate.
