August 2009 Dallas Electricity Rate Comparison
Posted by: | Comments
Today is August 14 2009 and we have gone out to the power to choose website to check on electricity rates from companies like Champion, Startex, Green Mountain Energy, Spark Energy, TXU, Ambit, Stream, Bounce, Texas Power and Reliant Energy. We checked on some other Texas electricity providers but these energy companies provide a good overall comparison of rates. We have sorted the electricity rates in order from cheapest to most expensive using the pricing available on the Power to Choose website.
Startex Power, Champion, and Green Mountain Energy, are some of the more popular electricity companies we recommend and Startex and Champion are currently offering some of the cheapest available electricity plans in the Dallas Texas area. There are no hidden fees or charges with Startex or Champion. If you use below 500 kWh per month than a $4.95 monthly service fee will kick in with Startex Power but other than that you are going to be good with the top two cheapest Dallas electricity plans in the chart.
This chart above is a historical snapshot of what Dallas residential electricity rates looked like for the month and day of August 14 2009. These charts sometimes help in determining the track record of a Texas electricity companies overall consistent performance in delivering a low cost electricity price to Texas energy consumers. October 2008 Houston Residential Electric Rates
Posted by: | CommentsHurricane Ike, Electric Comparison, and Relief from Summer Rates
Houston had a major issue with hurricane Ike this last month and surprisingly it had little effect on electric rates. A lot of oil and gas infrastructure was shut down but nothing was destroyed. This still usually has a negative impact on the price of electricity but because oil and natural gas is being swayed by several other factors in the trading commodities market the electric rates did not spike up.
Electric rates in Houston have come down way below their highs this summer when rates were at historical all time highs. That price spike in the summer was related to natural gas prices rising in the commodities sector beyond any level they have seen before. This had about a 90% correlation with the price of electricity. To complicate matters Houston residential electric rates were higher then usualy because several providers had bought electricity on the MCPE ERCOT market and could not meet their financial responsibilities. These electric companies also had no hedging in place so if an electric customer in Houston was on a variable electric rate they may have seen their rate tripple during this time.
Electric Rates Look Much Better From Summer Prices
Take a look at our Houston Texas electric rate comparison. We have rates listed from cheapest to most expensive. Most rates are fixed and there is a designation in the chart to differentiate between a fixed rate or a variable rate. I do not recommend signing a variable Houston electric rate contract as it is subject to change without notice. You may click on the links in the chart below and sign up online at these discounted online electric rate prices.

If you are confused about electric rates in Dallas and surrounding Oncor utility area we have a great comparison chart below comparing mostly fixed rates with several different electric providers. These electric rates are residential rates. There are a few variable rates in the mix because those companies only offered a variable electric rate so we listed their only option. The rates are designated as to whether they are a fixed electric rate or a variable rate. I recommend to avoid signing up on a variable rate because the month after you sign up on that rate plan the electric rate could do just about anything. A variable electric rate has taken many residential customers by surprise this summer when rates trippled in price. A fixed electric rate is a much safer way to lock into an energy rate because you know exactly what price you will pay the entire term of your contract.
Current October 2008 Residential Electric Rate Comparison
These rates are updated as of October 2 2008. Because residential electric rates change every few weeks these rates will be a little higher or lower as the month continues. This comparison chart will serve as a good indicative comparison of where residential electric rates are at for the month of October 2008. You may click on the links on this comparison chart and sign up online to receive a slightly lower electric rate then calling these providers on the phone. By signing up for electric service online you keep the electric companies costs low for aquiring a new customer and they reward you by giving you a slight discount then if you were to call and speak to a customer service rep over the phone. Signing up online also allows you to take advantage of online discounts that are not promoted when calling the providers on the phone. When you call an electric provider on the phone they expect to close about 70 % of those customers who call in. Because of this most providers will try to sell you a higher electric rate then is available via online discount offers.

July 2008 Houston Residential Electric Rates
Posted by: | CommentsHeads up on What is Going on in the Market This Month
Right now the market is still close to a 3 year high. We saw electric rates in Texas go up the entire month of June and now in July we still see energy prices rising higher. Most people have noticed in the news of how oil has reached $148 setting an all time historical record. The energy sector is up across the board and Houston electric rates are the highest in the state of Texas. Houston must pipe in their energy from far off causing line losses. The power consumption and demand of Houstonians causes congestion and they just don’t turn on enough power plants in your town to meet peak demand periods. Because of these issues you pay ridiculously high prices. Last year rates were around 10 – 11 cents kWh. If you are now trying to renew an energy contract or lock in again you will be surprised to see Houston electricity rates about 5 – 10 cents higher then last year.
July 2008 Electric Rate Chart
We have Houston, Harris County, Brazoria County, and surrounding Centerpoint Energy utility areas electric rates listed here from best to worst. A 12 month fixed Houston electric rate is recommended as rates are expected to travel back down. Long term contracts are cheaper, however you would be locking in at the top of the market when the expectation is that electric rates will be coming back down before 24 and 36 months. Many of the electric rates in the chart below are discount 12 month fixed electric rates. By clicking on the links below and signing up online you will achieve a slightly better rate then what that company normally advertises.

Posted by: | CommentsResidential Electricity Close to a 3 Year Historical High
The market is way up right now and a question on a lot of peoples mind is if they should sign up on a 12 month fixed rate contract or a longer term such as a 24 or 36 month fixed rate contract. Right now a 24 month and 36 month fixed rate contract is cheaper then a 12 month fixed rate. The reason you get a cheaper rate as you go longer terms is due to a correlation with the natural gas market. Natural gas futures contracts are cheaper as you go out on a longer term. You can verify this by looking at futures contracts for natural gas on one of many commodity broker quote sites. The key to what you should do is in the contract. The reason they give you a cheaper rate is because they believe rates will come down between now and 24 months or 36 months from now. Because the commodities traders expect rates to come down they have a strategy to sell you on a longer term contract at a cheaper price. Many people fall for this but keep this in mind, you would be locking in at the top of the market.

We recommend signing a 12 month fixed electric rate agreement and trying again next year. We have a comparison chart listed below of multiple electric companies in North Texas, Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, McKinney and the rest of the Oncor Electric Utility area of Texas. Compare and pick a provider. Some of the links below are discount 12 month rates, cheaper then what the Texas electric companies generally offer. Simply click the provider you want to go with and sign up online. The Texas government will automatically take you off your current electric provider and put you with your new one. You will not need to call your current provider to be taken off as this happens automatically.

May 2008 Houston Residential Electric Rate Comparison
Posted by: | CommentsWhat is Electricity Doing Right Now?
As of May 2008 Electric rates are currently close to a 3 year high and because of this Texas residential electric rates do not look so good right now. Many people would like to wait and renew when rates drop down but there is just no way to know when this will happen. Electric rates could hover at historical highs for several months before they drop back down to prices many people are comfortable paying.
Who We Recommend
We recommend signing a 12 month energy agreement and then trying again next year. Notice: Riverway Power recently cancelled their residential electric customers agreements in mid April according to several people who called in and left comments regarding them so we do not recommend using them as their fixed electric rate is subject to change. Our preferred electric providers at this time are Affordable Energy, Startex Energy and Bounce Energy Guaranteed No Deposit. All of these Texas electric companies have accurate billing, good customer service and low rates.
We are now approaching the end of the month of June and since writing this article rates have continued up along with a barrel of oil and natural gas. Oil and natural gas are trading at all time historical highs and the analysis shows that traders are hedging against a falling dollar by buying energy. The rise in prices can best be attributed to investors and traders trading up the price. This price spike will most likely be a bubble we will see fall but we have no idea when that will be. If you are buying Houston electricity you are exeriencing the worst of it. Houston electric rates are higher then they have ever been right now and higher then the rest of the state.

Saving Money On Electricity In Houston
Champion Energy has a very low cost electric rate in the Houston area. The price is lower then any of the other electric companies I have seen so far except for Startex Power. They only offer one term at 12 months but this is the most popular term for most people so it usually works for most peoples needs. The rate for January is at 11.1 cents a kWh with a $4.95 monthly service fee but Champion’s electric rate has gone up since then. If you add in the service fee into the rate goes up about .004 cents kWh which is still a lower rate then the most competitive providers offering residential electric service in Houston. For a more competitive electric rate then Champion Energy with no monthly service fee we recommend Startex Power. Depending on your area in Texas their rate will be higher or lower. If you live in Dallas Texas, Tyler Texas, Alpine, Fort Worth or other cities on the other side of the state there are cheaper providers then Champion. You can find out more here. Learn more about Texas Residential Electricity.

Champion Energy offers a low cost residential electric rate in Houston Texas that is quite a bit lower then most of the other Retail Energy Providers out there. They have only one term to choose from at 12 months but for those wondering about signing up for a longer term it is like buying insurance in case energy rates were to go up. Rates are fairly low right now (As of the posting of this article on January 2007) so you can lock in for 12 months and forget about what rates will do until next year. The rate Champion is offering (as of Jan 2007, when this article was written) is at 11.1 cents a kWh with a $4.95 monthly service fee (champion electric rates may be higher or lower then this now depending on what the market has done since the posting of this). If you are like most households you can add in the $4.95 monthly fee and the rate is still at about 11.3 cents a kWh (as of Jan 2007) total which if you were to look around is one of the lowest 12 month terms I have been able to find out there. We have the current Champion Energy electric rate listed in the blue box above. Click on the box above to sign up with Champion.

Merry Christmas everyone! We are ending the year and we have seen electric rates come down to a historical 12 month low. At this time which is December 21 2007 we have found a 6 month residential electric rate at 10.2 cents kWh with no monthly fee, an 8 month rate at 10.4 cents (no fee), and a 12 month rate at 11.1 cents a kWh (no fee). These are the lowest fixed rate terms all year and they are sitting at a support level that will likely see them jump up soon. Now would be the time to take advantage of this bottom in the Texas energy market. You can browse over to the lowest cost provider by going to their website to review their rates and sign up online. The promotional coupon code is built in to save additional money over their regular rate: Startex Power
If You Live In Houston
If you live in Houston you will actually save the most money with Startex Power as well. This reputable REP electric provider by the name of Startex has been in business since Texas deregulated. As of Dec 21 2007 they had a 1 year plan at 11.1 cents a kWh with no monthly service fee. As of Feb 2009 they have a rate in Dallas at 11 cents kWh for 1 year fixed and slightly higher in Houston. You may go to their promotional energy rate here: Startex Power
Rates have climbed quite a bit since this article was written back in December of 2007 but came back down again in historical fashion as of Feb 2009. Right now Startex Power still offers a consistently lower rate then the other Texas electric companies. Champion Energy offers a low 12 month rate as Natural Gas travels down

Low Residential rates following Natural Gas movement down
During 2007 we saw electric rates travel down with natural gas prices all the way up to January 1st 2008. Not but a few days after the 1st electric rates spiked up to their mid level historical average from the previous 12 months. Electric rates are still relatively low and a 12 month contract still makes good economical sense.
Champion Energy Residential Electricity
Champion Energy has made quite a swing down with their Texas residential electricity rate. Startex Power has come down even further and does not charge a monthly service fee unless you are using under 500 kWh a month. Most residential energy consumers use over 500 kWh. You can learn more about the cheapest electric provider in Texas by clicking here. Energy has become competitive among the residential electricity providers as many new companies enter the market. On power to choose we see over 40 Retail Electric Providers all offering a different branded product with its own little gimmick to sway you into signing up on their service. There are several hundred different electric rate products but in order to establish some benchmarks when comparing it is best to stick with a fixed rate electric product that doesn’t change during the term of the energy contract.
Residential Electricity Choices
There is the “Market Tracker” with TXU, the “Green Earth” plan with Green Mountain Energy, the Reliant “Power Tracker” and several other branded products to hook you in one way or another. The plans each have their merit but many consumers just want to know, “what is the cheapest plan?” If these Retail Electric companies just sell you the energy while you still receive your power from TXU or Centerpoint Energy as you always have then why not find the cheapest electric company and just go with them?
Going with the cheapest electric provider
I like this kind of logic myself and would start off by recommending you stay away from TXU and Reliant at this time as their products are not very competitive next to the competition. They rely a lot on their big names and it seems to be working. That means they do not have very much incentive to go lower or offer you a lower rate if for instance your contract comes up for renewal.
What is Champion Energy’s Residential Electric Rate?
Champion Energy has a 12 month rate that is 11.6 cents as of August (as of January 27 2008 they are now at 11.1 cents kWh)(Natural gas now trading around $9 – $10 raising Champion’s 12 month fixed electric rate to 12.6 cents kWh as of April 3 2008). The rate came down a lot due to Natural Gas trading around $6 MMBtu. This Natural Gas closing price is not typical and so locking in for atleast 12 months could be a wise choice for a household. They charge a $4.95 monthly service fee which for a house that uses 1500 kwh a month would bring the average electric rate up to around 11.93 cents kwh. This is still very low next to the other competitive providers and you can count on very good customer service, accurate billing and over 100 years of business knowledge in the industry. As of February 2009 electric rates have changed again and Startex Power currently has a better offer on several different fixed rates with no monthly service fee. You can learn more about the cheapest Texas electric rate by clicking here.
