If you have been needing to compare and shop for a cheaper Texas electric provider but just have not had the time we would like to encourage you to do so. Texas electric rates are at some of their cheapest prices they have been at for years. Last summer at this time a cheap rate would have been 16 cents a kWh. You can now sign up for a cheap electric rate in the Dallas area at around 9.4 cents a kWh. In Houston the rate is closer to 10 cents a kWh for a 1 year fixed rate. If your TXU Energy rates are becoming unbearably high then we recommend switching to a cheaper electric company. We only recommend that you come off of your TXU Energy rate if you are currently off contract with TXU Energy. We never recommend that you break a current contract that has not expired yet. The default area in the comparison chart above is for the Dallas area. If you live in a different area you can select it in the selection box above and click on get rates. Prices for your area will appear after clicking on get rates. Once you have decided on an energy rate just click on “continue”.
Going From TXU to Reliant Energy
If you have considered switching off of TXU Energy and onto a new electric provider that you have heard advertise on the radio than please read this. Reliant Energy rates are currently being advertised on billboards and on radio saying that they are now lowering their electric rates by “up to %10″. Unfortunately this means that you would still have to pay Reliant Energy around 13 – 14 cents a kWh when there are several energy providers offering residential electric rates in the 9 – 10 cents per kWh range for a 1 year fixed rate. Don’t be fooled by a clever marketing campaign. Reliant Energy radio ads have their coworkers on the ads explaining that they love being able to help people but in reality paying an inflated price for electricity service is not really a help in this current economy. There are several reputable electric companies in Texas that offer much cheaper electricity service than Reliant and TXU Energy rates. We have a comparison chart of electric companies that beat both Reliant Energy rates and TXU Electric rates listed in the comparison chart above.

The chart above has all fees and charges disclosed so you know exactly what you are signing up for. We want you to have no surprises when signing up for electric service as some providers we do not have on the chart do not disclose all charges in their rate. We do not work with Texas electricity companies that hide certain fees and charges that most electric companies will disclose in plain english.

There’s probably not one in a hundred homes in Katy Texas that only uses 1,000 kwh of power per month, yet all of you advertise that your price’s are based on that usage. What is the price for 3,000 kws or 4,000 or 5,000? Am I to believe that it’s all the same price? Why not give all the facts so we can compare based on what most of us actually use.

In response to JD Walsh: The Texas PUCT requires that the electricity facts label average in all fees and charges based on an average of 1,000 kWh because that is a close average of what residential energy consumers use in Texas. If you use more then 1,000 kWh your electric rate with any of the providers we provide in our comparison chart would average lower. For instance if there is a provider offering a 10.3 cent per kWh rate and they have a $4.95 monthly service fee you would need to divide the $4.95 by 1,000 and then add that to the rate to get an average for 1,000 kWh. So $4.95/1000 = .00495. When adding .00495 + .103 you get an average rate of .10795 cents per kWh. If you use 3,000 kWh you would just divide $4.95 by 3,000 kWh. That would be $4.95/3,000 = .00165. This would be an average electric rate of .103 + .00165 = .10465 cents per kWh.
So the more energy you use the lower your average rate will be because the monthly service fee will average down more. The 1,000 kWh average in the electricity facts label is used in most facts labels for simplicity and is not a trick to deceive those who use more energy. In fact for those customers who use more energy than 1,000 kWh a month will have a lower price for their average electricity rate because the monthly service fee will average out lower.
If you are a high energy user it then would make sense to pick a provider that has a low rate but may also have a monthly service fee because the overall rate will average lower than a company that does not have a monthly service fee but has a higher per kWh rate.

How can you say that 1,000 kWh is what you are using as an average? I have a very small house, 1,000, a garage that is not heated or cooled, a spouse, and a chihuahua. With my current plan I use 1,700 in the middle of the summer with a thermostat set on 78. My plan is much, much lower than yours would seem to be, $4.95 monthly charge included. What is your particular problem? I’m retired from the military, retired from the police force, currently working on my third retirement, and not yet receiving Social Security. Even to me this rate seems absolutely unbelieveable. You must think everyone in Texas is a moron. What is your problem. Mine would be a money problem if I went with your company. I am perfectly happy with the company I have now and have decided to stop looking aroung for a “better rate” than you have. Money currently is not my problem but I do believe it would be with you!!!

I think you don’t understand. At 1700 kWh your energy cost would average lower than the average calculated at 1,000 kWh.
To compare just take your total dollar amount and divide it by the kilowatt hours. That will give you the average rate you pay your provider. What rate are you paying now?
The 1000 lwh example is not making the rate look better. At 1700 kWh our rates when averaged with a monthly fee would look even cheaper than 1000 kWh example. Please let me know if you need more clarification.

I am considering switching providers and am looking at JUST ENERGY.has anyone used them before or are they familiar with it…it is advertising a rate of 12.5 kwh-lock in for 5 yrs. Is that a good rate or what… Confused and disgusted in Dallas

I think it is a good price for 12.5 cents for 5 years even though it is a little higher than the short term plans. By locking in long term you are basically insuring yourself against higher price spikes in the future.
I would call and make sure there are no additional charges. Also check the terms of service and see if Just Energy has any clauses that allow for additional fees and charges to be added on that are not disclosed in the advertised rate of 12.5 cents.

I am interested to find out how many people have seen their TXU energy bill increase significantly since the installation of the new Advanced Meter. I spoken to more than 15 people in the Central Texas area and they all have seen at least an increase of 25% more than their normal average.

In response to Arnette……I too live in Central Texas and recently had the new meter installed. Not only myself, but all the neighbors I have spoken with are complaining about how much the bill is this month. Your 25% increase is right on target. Some neighbors have called TXU to complain but received no satifaction. Not sure what to do next. Got any ideas?

My electricity bill for Dec. was $388! I turned the heat down to 65, closed all the vents in the house but one in my bedroom where I now reside til Spring; turned off all security lights around my property; turned the hot water heater down; only do 2-3 loads of cold water laundry a week, and yet my bill this month is $361!!! I’m from WA State where it’s colder and wetter for a longer period of time and I have never had such outrageous bills! Does TXU care? No-it’s a greedy, money-hungry company that has a monopoly in some areas of Texas because people cannot switch to any other company. Everytime I call TXU, it’s like talking to a wall. We’re paying for TXU’s greed! I’m considering writing to the governor of TX or perhaps even the President. Our voices should count. It would be nice if America took care of its own people before sending billions to help other countries! I filed a complaint directly to the governor of WA after trying for 5 months to get my unemployment. I was contacted by the State of WA about a week or so after I wrote the letter and was told there was no reason I ever should have been declined; and I received my unemployment money just a few days later!

What city are you living in Michel? I would request your historical electric usage data file from your local poles and wires company. Compare your TDSP charges with what’s on your TXU bill to do a bill audit. Subtract the TDSP charges from the bill to see what TXU is charging you and what the pole and wires electric utility is charging you. Unfortunately you cannot do anything about the pole and wires TDSP charges as they are controlled by one company. Also I would call TXU and explain your situation. TXU has knowledgable staff that may be able to atleast explain whay your bill was so high.

Speaking about TDSP charges, When are those going be under investigation. I also have turned down or off everything that I can in my shop. My Usage is down to 1860kw, although somehow this month TXU said my billing KW is 26. My current contract rate is supposed to be 7.9 but TXU charges me 8.3 even though I have called several times to get it adjusted. My usage bill this month is $168.62 but my TDSP charges are another $212.59 making the bill $400.59. I know it is not much compared to some bills out there, but it is alot to me. Is there not a third party company to audit bills and TDSP charges? Because personally I do not have the time to go through the 178 page tariff which regulates the amount that Oncor can hit us with. It would take a third party because I can personnaly asure TXU cares nothing about how happy you are, just how quick you can pay your bill.

You can call Oncor and request your TDSP usage file. It will show you your usage and TDSP charges. You can complain to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and they will do their best to investigate that Oncor was reading your meter correctly. Be sure to complain correctly. Oncor reads your meter and TXU passes those readings through on your bill. It sounds like you would like to complain about Oncor for potentially not reading your meter correctly.
So be sure to explain to the PUCT that you believe Oncor may not be reading your meter correctly.

I have just had the new Digital meter installed by Oncor and would like to know what the readings are. I know it shows the total KWH ,but it also shows on the left side of the meter a CLS,then changes to 20 Amps , then it shows 11.38 KW in the middle. These never seem to change. I actually like the meter and is easy to read, but I kind of miss looking at the old meter during high usage and seeing it spin.
Prior to the change I had been charting the usage daily and the new meter is accurate in comparison.
