Recent Changes In Rates Among The Electric Companies

As of January 9 2008 several electric companies have updated their electric rates in an attempt to become the lowest cost Retail Electric Provider in Texas. The prices are lowest in the TXU\Oncor (Dallas\Fort Worth) area and are a little higher in the Centerpoint region (Houston Texas). Champion Energy has the best 12 month fixed rate term in the Houston area at 11.1 cents kWh with a $4.95 monthly service fee. Add the fee in and most people are still at about 11.3 cents a kWh. Competing Among Providers

Startex Power is now lower then Spark Energy’s 12 month residential electric rate. I compared several factors when deciding that their rate is lower. For instance both companies do not charge a monthly customer service charge. Spark offers a rate at 11.9 cents kwh and Startex Power offers a rate at 11.4 cents. Since neither have a monthly customer service charge you will do better by signing up with Startex Power. As a comparative example, if you were to compare Champion Energy who offers a 11.1 cent per kWh energy rate you would think they have a rate just as good as Startex but this isn’t the case. Because Champion charges $4.95 a month in customer service charges your rate will be about the same but they only have this one term to choose from. If you average in the monthly customer service charge they are close to 11.3 cents kWh. So the winning provider for October - November 2007 Residential electric rates is Startex Power and of course Champion just about ties with their rate but depending on your usage could be off by a very small fraction. Way to go Startex, I am glad you decided to get with the program and become more competitive with your fixed electric rate! Startex also happens to have a very good 1 month promo rate at 9.4 cents kwh. This is really low but on the 2nd month as of last month they charged 12.1 cents kWh. The reason for the higher rate is that you are month to month with them when signing on the one month promo. This however is good if you don’t want to sign a contract. This is one of the best deals around for a no contract energy rate.
