New Efficient FutureGen Power Plant Saving Texas money and the environment
Governor Perry created the Governor's Clean Coal Technology Council, in order to improve the state's air quality and ensure an adequate electricity supply at the same time. The 13-member council is made up of four state legislators, the chairs of the Public Utility Commission and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, environmental experts and energy industry representatives.
Texas Railroad Commissioner and council Chairman Michael L. Williams said 58 percent of Texas electricity is produced from coal, but emissions are a problem.
The idea of FutureGen is to build an electrical generating plant that produces no emissions and to be able to take the coal and, through a gasification process, pull byproducts from it and store them.
Carbon dioxide pulled from the coal would then be used in an enhanced oil recovery process instead of just a waste biproduct. This waste biproduct could then be used in the East Texas oil field to assist in pulling more oil out of the ground.
