Choosing a good electric company in East Texas |
|||||||||
There are over 40 Retail Electric Providers to choose and compare in Tyler Texas. These companies have wide and varied electricity rate products. When choosing a provider you just want to be familiar with what we would consider the bottom line questions to ask.
These bottom line questions are: What is the "energy only" rate? What is the annualized average "utility charge"? Are there any addional fees added to this besides taxes?
These are the 3 questions to ask to be sure of what you are paying. When Texas deregulated they split the utility from the energy provider. Because of this, nost electric suppliers will quote you the "energy only" rate and that is it. There are still the "utility charges" but these charges are passed through from the utility on whichever electric company you switch to. These charges remain the same regardless of which provider you go with.
When asking the incumbent provider what they charge you will usually be told a bundled rate. This rate includes the "energy only" charge amd the "utility rate". This is not easy to compare with the other energy rates you are quoted. In order to decipher a bill you should talk to an energy consultant who can request your historical usage and do a bill audit to see what it is you actually pay.
A bill audit can be created that puts your historical electricity usage next to all the energy rates you have been quoted. All you would need to do is add the utility charge to the energy rates you are quoted and that would be your total energy charges minus taxes. A commercial business or residential customer could call Reliant, TXU, First Choice Power, Direct Energy or AEP and find out exactly what the energy charge is they are quoting them by subtracting the utility charge the energy consultant worked out for you in the bill audit. Sometimes the electricity rate the incument provider charges is much higher then competitive electricity providers and sometimes it could be lower. It is important to have a bill audit done in order to know for sure.
