Killeen Texas was mainly a farming community until the 1940's and was secluded from much of the rest of Texas trade. Things drastically changed when Camp Hood was built to assist with winning World War II. Valuable human resources moved in by the thousands to help in the construction and booming business created by the new military community. Many farms closed and a more commercial type infrastructure developed because of the military base paving the way for more opportunity unfamiliar to local residents. Much of the new businesses that were started were created as services to the military needs. After World War II Killeen Texas had a short recession but it ended when Fort Hood was established as a a permanent army base Things picked up again and the economy thrived. In the 50's over a hundred new commercial buildings were constructed in Killeen Texas causing a dramatic shift in the economy. Since this time Killeen has become the largest city in Bell County and a place for new and old business to experience growth and opportunity.
